Resumen

Background: Patient stagnation in the Emergency Department (ED) of Surgery is one of the serious issues in hospital service management. This condition reflects a blockage in the flow of patients from the ED to inpatient wards, which risks lowering service quality and increasing patient safety risks. According to The Joint Commission standards, patient boarding time, which is the duration a patient stays in the ED after being declared in need of hospitalization, must not exceed 4 hours. A length of stay exceeding this standard has been proven to increase the risk of nosocomial infections, staff fatigue, and worsen patient satisfaction. At Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo General Hospital, Makassar, this stagnation problem still frequently occurs and requires systematic improvement. Objective: This study aims to develop improvement strategies for patient stagnation from the Surgical Emergency Department (ED) to the Inpatient Unit using the Lean Hospital approach.
