Abstract

Abstract

This paper is intended to prove that the aim of Part I, Book VI of Plato’s Republic is to demonstrate the political fitness of the philosopher-ruler. This is shown by the position of the passage in the work’s argument distribution, as well as by the analysis of its internal structure. The demonstration of the philosopher's political fitness is made in three stages, corresponding with the three natural sections of the text: (1) the assertion of the political fitness of the governor philosopher; (2) the obstruction of said political fitness in existing societies; (3) the development of said political fitness in the ideal society.
