Abstract

Introduction: Landry Guillain Barré Strohl Syndrome (LGBSS) affects children and adults of both sexes. The cause is unworn. It is generally preceded by a respiratory or gastrointestinal infection. The annual incidence varies from 0.75 to 2 cases for 100.000 inhabitants, with prevalence in females and in children under 18 years of age. The rate of notification of Acute Flaccid Palsy (AFP) in Venezuela (1990) was 1, 4 p/100.000 children under 15 years of age, with the highest frequency reported in the state of Lara state. Objective: To compare the clinical-epidemiological behavior of the LGBSS in the population under 14 years of age in the Pediatric Hospital "Dr. Agustín Zubillaga" of Barquisimeto during the periods 1982-1992 and 1997-2005. Methods: Two descriptive studies were reviewed, the first one carried out by González et al. (1982-1992) and the second one carried out by our group (1997-2005). The main clinical-epidemiological characteristics were compared. Results: The reviewed studies showed a higher frequency of the LGBSS in pre school and school children, without prevalence of gender. The clinical characteristics do not show important differences among the two studies, apart of a more severe involvement of upper limbs, children that received mechanical ventilation (MV) and less affectation of cranial nerves and sensibility alterations for the period 1982-1992. In the second period there was a decrease in the number of patients that continued with their physiatric therapy after discharge Conclusion: In our institution, in the Landry Guillain Barré Strohl Syndrome (LGBSS) significant differences were not observed for the clinical-epidemiological findings between both comparative studies, but an important decrease of the cases that were followed by physiatric control and ambulatory rehabilitation after discharge was observed.
