Academic self-efficiency and self-esteem in university students
Keywords:
Academic self-efficacy, Self-Esteem, Students, UniversityAbstract
The theory of self-efficacy holds that what we believe about ourselves greatly influences the choice of the task, the level of effort, persistence, and subsequent performance; likewise, self-esteem is one of the strongest predictors of academic performance. For this reason, the present study aims to analyze the relationship between academic self-efficacy and self-esteem. For this purpose, a quantitative, descriptive correlational design was used. To measure the first variable, the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale was applied, and to measure self-esteem, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was applied to a sample of 126 Early Childhood Education students from a private university. As a conclusion, it was determined that there is a negative and non-significant relationship between Academic Self-Efficacy and Self-Esteem, showing that it seems that self-esteem would not be a determining variable for academic self-efficacy. This may be due to the broadness of both constructs and the measures used, as indicated by the scientific evidence.
