Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the cytotoxic effects produced by the extract of the AT cortex in Vero cells. Methods: An experimental study was carried out using the AT extract obtained by the Soxhlet method, dried and diluted in salt phosphate buffer. Cell viability was determined with methyl tetrazolium (MTT) and in the presence of the AT extract at 10, 20, 30, 50 and 55 μg/ml that were tested at a density of 4,000 cells per well. To establish morphological alterations, the May-Grunwald/Giemsa stain at 10, 20 and 30 μg/μL at a density of 200,000 cells/mL was used. They were incubated for 24 and 48 hours of exposure and compared with the respective control group. The data obtained with the Graph PadPrism version 5.0 program were analyzed. Results: The extract produced a significant decrease in cell viability (P<0.05) with respect to the control group, which was evidenced by the formation of vacuoles and nuclear expansion proportional to time and concentration used. Conclusion: AT extract can be considered as cytotoxic.
