Abstract

After years of political and economic crises, the occurrence of the COVID19 pandemic in parallel with the decision of Saudi Arabia and Russia to increase oil supply has caused sizable negative shocks over oil prices that will worsen the precarious living conditions of the Venezuelan population. According to our general equilibrium analyses, hikes in prices of basic goods and services will ensue, along with an extraordinary contraction of economic activities; scarcity and rationing policies might cause social unrest and shifts in power relations.
