Abstract

Abstract

Latin American dictatorships

Caudillism offers us the same old formulas for redemption, but now wrapped up in a rhetorical defense of democracy. Its leaders conserve the anti-imperialist, anti-oligarchic, Statist and Third World discourse inherited from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, while including a novel element (unthinkable for traditional populism): they o as far as to declare themselves communists, devotees of Marxist-Leninism and the Cuban model. They encourage elections, introduce new constitutions and conserve the appearance of a separation of powers. What some analysts -superficially- have called “the Left’s hour” was never that. The model has become deadlocked but the conditions favoring the rise of authoritarianism are still present in several Latin American countries.
