Professional nursing ethics: beyond the rules, a commitment

Abstract

Introduction: Nursing ethics constitutes the foundation of professional identity, positioning itself as a vital commitment that transcends mere regulatory compliance. The objective of this essay is to analyze the transition of normative ethics in nursing towards an ethics of excellence and critical responsibility in the face of the complex challenges of the Latin American context, making a transition towards an ethics of excellence and responsibility necessary. Development: Based on the analysis of the global and regional regulatory frameworks, it is highlighted that care practice must focus on human dignity, social justice, and accountability. In the Latin American context, this duty acquires a political nuance that compels professionals to act with critical sensitivity toward structural injustices. Furthermore, when dealing with complex dilemmas such as the allocation of limited resources, the need for institutional ethical deliberation, transformative leadership, and caregiver self-care to prevent moral distress is substantiated. Conclusions: Professional ethics demands continuous training based on critical reflection and safe work environments that encourage deliberation. It is configured as a path of absolute coherence between values and action, where the professional exercises leadership at the service of life and humanized care.
