Since the field of psychology, there has been evidence of a limited number of studies and a significant abandonment of fanaticism, as well as a proliferation of definitions that use psychological terminology without much rigor from various areas of knowledge, which has contributed to its conceptual inaccuracy. This research conducted a state-of-the-art review with the aim of determining the current status of the theoretical-conceptual development of the psychological dimension of the phenomenon. To this end, 57 documentary sources obtained from the Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Semantic Scholar, and Worldcat databases were analyzed, establishing the following search criteria: a) descriptors such as «fanaticism», «fanatic», and «fanatical behavior»; b) produced in the last 10 years (2015-2025); c) articles, books, and research papers; d) theoretical and conceptual development on the psychological dimension of the phenomenon and e) available in Spanish and English. The results showed a greater representation of Englishlanguage literature, a predominant use of the word fanaticism in contrast to other descriptors, and the absence of a uniform pattern in the approach to the phenomenon. In turn, it revealed the coexistence of diverse conceptions, cognitive, affective, and behavioral components, psychological references, as well as fanatical objects and common practices in the different variants of fanaticism. |
