La diplopía que bajó de un cocotero… Trauma por coco

Resumen

Se presenta el caso clínico de un paciente a quien lacaída de un coco y el consecuente traumatismo sobre su cara,produjo una fractura del piso orbitario con atrapamientomuscular, diplopía no diagnosticada y confundida con unaneurisma cerebral. Se hacen consideraciones sobre estetipo de accidentes en playas arenosas donde abundancocoteros, la comparación de su frecuencia con ataquesde tiburón y acerca de cómo un artículo médico puede sertergiversado por el autor y convertido en noticia de prensacomo para obtener el Ig Premio Nobel de Medicina con basea ¨una investigación que no puede o no debe ser duplicada¨logros que primero hacen reír y después pensar e intentancelebrar lo inusual, imaginativo y espolear el interés porla ciencia, la medicina y la tecnología.

SUMMARY

We present the clinical case of a patient who, afterbeing hit in the face by a falling coconut, with consequenttrauma to his face, fractured his orbital floor with muscleentrapment and undiagnosed diplopia which was mistakenfor a brain aneurysm. We make considerations about suchaccidents on sandy beaches where coconut trees abound,compare its frequency with shark attacks and discuss howa medical article can be misrepresented by its author andbecome news in order to obtain the nomination for the IgNobel Prize for medicine based on ¨research that cannotor should not be duplicated; achievements that first makeyou laugh and then make you think and try to celebrate theunusual, imaginative and spur interest in science, medicineand technology
