Abstract

Objective: to determine the relationship of stressful events with the onset of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in patients who consulted the Gastroenterology Service of the Hospital Vargas de Caracas from July to December 2016. Materials and Methods: it is a descriptive and transversal research, with a field design and a quantitative approach that included 62 patients diagnosed with IBD who were asked a structured question about the stressful events that occurred in the year before the onset of symptoms. Results: Of 62 patients evaluated, 47 (75.8%) had a diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and 15 (24.19%) Crohn's Disease (CD), the average age was 48.46 ± 1.53 years, with a minimum age of 27 ears. Stressful events were found that could be related to the onset of IBD in 42 patients (67.74%). Predominant individual intrinsic factors such as emotional-family (52.38%) followed by mourning (14.29%), No stressful events were found in 20 patients (32.26%). Conclusions: in the present study we found that 67.74% of the patients studied reported stressful events in the year prior to the diagnosis of IBD. There was a significant difference according to the presence of specific stressors according to the type of inflammatory bowel disease.
