Abstract

Silicone, a synthetic polymer, is used in a multitude of medical products, of which the most publically recognized are breast implants. Silicone breast implants have been in use since the early 1960s and reports of autoimmune-like syndromes began appearing in the medical literature soon thereafter. Although epidemiological studies have failed to demonstrate such an association, clinical reports continue to emerge that correlate silicone as an adjuvant which induces autoimmune phenomena, recently termed "siliconosis", forming part of a new syndrome termed ASIA syndrome ( autoimmune / autoinflammatory síndrome induced by adjuvant). Scleroderma, a relatively rare connective tissue disease, is the localized and systemic disease with defined criteria is the disease which has been most often linked until now with silicone breast implants. We present a case of localized scleroderma (morphea) after a replacement of breast implants. We also include a review of this subject in medical literature.
