Abstract

ABSTRACT

In the sections  exposed in the Interior Mountain Range, the Chimana Formation can be subdivided into five vertical-lateral members,  the type localities and reference sections of those units are assigned as follows: Type localities : Caripe Member: northwestern slope of Cerro Grande, SW of Caripe, Monagas state; Corral Viejo Member: same type locality after ROD & MAYNC (1954) at Corral Viejo, on the road San Francisco-Caripe, south of Periquito town, with the lithologic redefinition of YORIS (1985a); Caripito Member: northern flank of Caripito river, at the locality of Valle Solo, west of Caripito (Monagas state); Chimana Grande and Putucual members: Putucual river, north of the San Juan river valley (Sucre state). Reference sections: Caripe Member (3.2 Km to the NW of the Guacharo Cave, road cut between La Cueva and San Agustin, Monagas state); Corral Viejo member (northwestern slope of Cerro Grande, at type locality of the Caripe Member, and El Chorrerón creek, in front of the Guacharo Cave); Caripito Member (Azagua river, Quebrada Arriba-tributary of the former-, south of Caripito river, Monagas state). The members of Chimana Formation are regionally persistents in the Interior Mountain Range and one can identify them following adequately their lithologic definitions.
