Abstract

Abstract

A most intriguing feature of Plato’s Laws is the tension between hedonism and anti-hedonism. Which kind of hedonism and anti-hedonism? Are these really inconsistent? The answer to these and other questions requires to establish the role that Plato assigns to pleasure in determining the Laws fundamental concepts of virtue, education, art, legislation and human nature. This enables us to understand the meaning of the loci considered as hedonistic and the anti-hedonistic ones and to find the path to a platonic reconciliation of these two antagonistic states of mind.
