| Abstract: | Objective: To evaluate the effect of weight loss induced by diet and exercise on salt sensitivity and the involvement of metabolic component. Methodology: We recorded changes in Body Mass Index (BMI), % Body Fat (% BF), Waist Circumference (WC), Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP), Diastolic (DBP), glucose and lipid profile, at the beginning, at 2, 6,10,14 and 18 weeks of a diet and exercise program, and performed glucose tolerance test, at baseline and at 18 weeks, to a group of Salt Resistant (SR) (n=17) and Salt Sensitive (n=11) subjects. Results: 77.7% of the subjects evaluated at the end of the diet became SR. There were only significant decrease in BMI, % GC and triacylglycerols (TAG) in both groups, whereas insulin only in the SS. Conclusion: Salt sensitivity probably is reversed by weight loss induced by diet and exercise, and insulin seems to participate in this conversion. |
