dc.description.abstractThe natural history of HIV infection has been described as an insidious and progressive decline of immune function generally agreed that the recognition of some oral manifestation; it is of great significance because they may represent the first sign of the diseases. The aim of this study was to asses types and prevalence of HIV-related oral lesion and opportunistic infections. METHOD: This is a transversal, preliminary and exploratory study; the study group consisted of 208 patients with serological evidence of HIV infection, consecutively examined between November 1998 and July 2000. RESULTS: One hundred eight patients had oral lesions (66%), the most common were: candidiasis (48.7%), oral hairy leucoplakia (12.3%), herpes labialis (11.7%); other oral lesions were leucoplakia (11.7%) and mucosal pigmentation (4.5%).The opportunistic infections most common were hepatitis (14.9%), Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (11,5%), herpes zoster virus infection (8.6%) and Toxoplasmosis (8.6%). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with HIV/AIDS infection have an ample spectrum of oral lesions and opportunistic infections; recognition, diagnostic testing, management and appropriate therapeutic are important to give to this persons a better life quality.en_US
