| en_US |
| dc.description.sponsorship | The most frequent micronutrient deficiencies in the world are iron, iodine and vitamin A. These biochemical indicators identify hidden malnutrition in children and denote the importance of incorporating them into nutritional status monitoring. Since 1992, corn and wheat flours have been fortified with vitamin A in Venezuela to prevent deficiency. In order to evaluate the correlation between subclinical levels of vitamin A and alterations in conjunctival impression cytology (CIC), recommended as simple and inexpensive for the detection of deficiency of this vitamin, a descriptive, cross-sectional and correlative study was carried out in 80 healthy, eutrophic children who attended the Outpatient Clinic of the Children's Hospital "J.M de los Ríos", Caracas. Venezuela: from June to August 2000, who were analyzed for serum retinol and CIC. A high prevalence of subclinical levels of Vitamin A (31.3%) and abnormal IQC (76.25%) was found, indicating a severe problem of subclinical vitamin A deficiency. However, we did not find a correlation between vitamin A levels and IQC (P= 0.076). | en_US |
