| en_US |
| dc.description.sponsorship | A cross-sectional study was carried out in the Pediatric and Childcare Clinic and in the Emergency Service of the “J.M.” Children's Hospital. de los Ríos, to investigate mothers' knowledge of acute diarrhea and dehydration, as well as the behavior they adopt when faced with this disease in their children. 120 mothers from Caracas with children under five years of age and who had had at least one episode of diarrhea in the previous month were interviewed. The variables were expressed through their frequency and percentage value. Contrasts were performed using Pearson's X2 test, X2 with Yates correction and Fisher's exact test. It was found that 68.3% of the mothers belonged to class IV of the modified Graffar scale, 25% to III and 6.7% to V. 50% managed the concept of diarrhea and 46 % knows at least one of its manifestations. 48.3% of mothers identified at least one sign or symptom of dehydration. Most mothers have ever used Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), only 35% prepare and preserve them properly. No correlation was found between mothers' Graffar class and their knowledge about diarrhea and dehydration. The majority identify some of the manifestations of diarrhea and signs and symptoms of dehydration, know the OROs and have used them, but do not prepare them correctly. | en_US |
