| dc.description.sponsorship | Inguinal hernias are a very frequent pathology, affecting between 3 to 5% of the entire population in general. When referring to the recurrence of inguinal hernias, we must note that their repair is more difficult and dangerous. A patient undergoing a recurrent hernia operation will have a 19-39% chance of developing a recurrence, and this increases with each procedure. Objective: To analyze the percentage and time of recurrence of inguinal hernias in patients treated surgically in the General Surgery Service of the University Hospital of Caracas from 2015-2020. Methods: retrospective study, descriptive and analytical type. For data collection, medical records of patients operated on for inguinal hernias in the 2015-2020 period were evaluated. Graphs and tables were implemented to show the percentage and time of recurrence of inguinal hernias. Results: 52 cases of recurrent inguinal hernias were treated, representing 43% of a total of 120 patients who presented inguinal hernias. Observing the three surgical techniques with the most cases of recurrences: the Bassini technique with 14%, Rutkow-Robbins with 10% and Linchtenstein with 9% of the cases; with a recurrence time after the first intervention which was greater than one year after the first intervention. Conclusions: the recurrence time is greater than a year after the intervention and the techniques with the most cases of recurrence were: Linchstenstein, Bassini and Rutkow-Robbins | en_US |
