To evaluate preoperative fasting by ultrasound measurement of the gastric antrum in patients undergoing emergency surgery who attend the Surgery Service of the Dr. Miguel Pérez Carreño Hospital from June 1 to August 31, 2022. Methods: Observational, descriptive and prospective study. Preoperative fasting was determined through anamnesis. Gastric POCUS was used for ultrasound measurement of the antral cross-sectional area using the mathematical model validated by Perlas. Results: A total of 72 patients who underwent emergency surgery for abdominal laparotomy were included, 51.38% female and 48.61% male with a mean age of 35.34 ± 11.2 years. Mean preoperative fasting was 6.41 ± 2.39 hours. The mean cross-sectional area of the stomach antrum was 10.89 ± 6.81 cm2, while the gastric volume had a mean of 140.84 ± 94.36 milliliters. There were no statistically significant differences in the correlation of fasting time with gastric volume (p=0.08 > 0.05) or with the type of gastric content (p=0.058 > 0.05). Conclusions: The use of gastric POCUS is a non-invasive, useful and safe tool that allows contrasting the information provided by patients during the anamnesis about preoperative fasting, facilitating decision-making about the anesthetic induction technique to prevent the risk of aspiration of gastric contentsen_US
