| Abstract: | Serrasalmus hastatus a new species of piranha with a highly compressed, deep body is described from the Rio Branco and Rio Negro of Brazil. It is diagnosed by its nearly straight dorsal head profile in combination with a pigmentation pattern that includes thin, vertically elongated spots and thin stripes. Serrasalmus altuvei Ramírez and S. compressus Jegu et al., are compared with the new species, as well as each other |
