In this article I study the use of the hedge como in Spanish spoken in Venezuela. Hedging is a discursive and linguistic strategy which the speaker can resort to in order to mitigate the content of his/her propositions. Among the various devices that can be used to achieve mitigation, I have analyzed the use of como in the sociolinguistic corpora of Caracas, Maracaibo and Mérida with the purpose of, on the one hand, examining the linguistic contexts in which the adverb is used and explaining if there is some relationship between its use and extralinguistic factors (age, socioeconomic status and sex) which characterize the sample, and on the other, determining the possible differences between the speakers of the three dialects. The results show that dialectal variation does not account for significant differences in the use of the hedge. The mitigating como is used more frequently by women; in the age group between 30 and 60; and in all socioeconomic levels (but with a higher percentage in the higher level).es_VE
