Resumen

Diabetic nephropathy is the most commoncause of end stage renal failure inthe world. Rigid control of blood pressureand blood sugar is effective in preventing the onsetand progression of the disease. But an effective method ofpreventing it has not yet been identified. Coenzyme Q10is effective in controlling oxidative stress, glycemic control, and blood pressure. Therefore, its capacity for preventingdiabetic nephropathy can be investigated. In this double blind randomized clinical trial, 68 eligiblediabetic patients with normoalbuminuria or microalbuminuriawere randomly selected and were divided to twomached groups of 34 by tossing coin. In both groups, fastingblood sugar, 2-hour post prandial glucose, HbA1C,albumin to urinary creatinine ratio (Alb/Cr), and diastolicand systolic blood pressure were measured. One groupreceived 100 mg Q10 daily for 8 weeks and the othergroup received 8 weeks of placebo. Both groups weremonitored and examained every 3 months and finally after18 months, the variables were again measured by thesame initial method and the results were compared witht-test and repeated mesure analysis. The Q10 capsule wasable to significantly reduce fasting blood glucose, 2h postprandial glucose, HbA1C, and albumin / urinary creatinineratio (proteinuria) (p≤0.05), but did not significantlychange systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In this 18-month follow-up, Q10 showed prophylactic effectson glycemic control and proteinuria.
