Abstract

In recent years, the possible relationship between hepatitis C virus infection and iron overload has been studied; however, the real impact of this relationship has not been completely elucidated. Recent scientific literature reveals that chronic HCV infection can lead to to an overload of iron, affecting the life cycle of the virus; although contradictory results to this approach are also present in the reviews. Other conditions, such as liver cirrhosis, hemochromatosis, hemoglobinopathies, hemolytic anemias, can generate iron overload; without leaving aside the clinical scenario when more than one pathological entity can be present simultaneously in an individual. In the present work, a clinical case is presented with a review of the literature, of a female patient with symptoms of liver disease, in which a diagnosis of chronic hepatitis C virus infection, hereditary hemochromatosis and liver cirrhosis is made.
