Abstract

An approach to the relationship between video games and transmedia storytelling as new communication ways. First, it describes chronologically the evolution of the term transmedia. Following, it explores the Canon vs. Fandom relation and finally it describes some of the most common participatory culture ways about videogames: forums, reviews, gameplay, fanfiction, mods, cosplay and machinima. It concludes that beyond entertainment possibilities, parents and teachers must understand that transmedia storytelling, together with video games, provide also great opportunities to use the educational environment and the informal learning.
