The Lived Death: Experience and Interpretation in Venezuelan Migration

Resumen

Este artículo analiza cómo los migrantes venezolanos viven y resignifican la muerte de un ser querido en contextos de migración. A través de entrevistas semiestructuradas a cuatro personas residentes en el extranjero, y tomando como punto de partida un estudio previo sobre la relación entre muerte y migración, se exploran no solo los relatos del duelo, sino también la manera en que estos quedan inscritos en una trama amplia de memorias, rituales, afectos y prácticas religiosas y seculares. La investigación, de enfoque microsociológico, orientación cualitativa e inspirada en la fenomenología y el interaccionismo simbólico, organiza los relatos en cuatro categorías de análisis: religión, salud mental, normalización de la muerte y tecnología. A través de estos ejes, se observa cómo la migración transforma la experiencia de la muerte, marcada por tensiones entre visibilidad e invisibilidad, la ruptura de rituales tradicionales y la importancia de la comunidad y la tecnología para darle sentido. This article examines how Venezuelan migrants experience and reinterpret the death of a loved one within the context of migration. Through semi-structured interviews with four individuals residing abroad, and building on a previous study on the relationship between death and migration, the study explores narratives of grief and how they are embedded within a broader tapestry of memories, rituals, emotions, and religious and secular practices. Employing a microsociological, qualitative approach informed by phenomenology and symbolic interactionism, the research organizes the narratives into four categories of analysis: religion, mental health, the normalization of death, and technology. Through these themes, the paper demonstrates how migration alters the experience of death, characterized by the tension between visibility and invisibility, the disruption of traditional rituals, and the significance of community and technology in making sense of loss.
