Abstract

Abstract

The soil is a fundamental component of the system

in getting comfort  for the Human being, while keep a healthful and hospitality environment”, which is one of the objectives of the Sustainable Agriculture. In this paper the role of the soil in getting a sustainable agriculture is analyzed, taken in account the main functions attributed to it (i.e. capacity to supply nutriments and water, and conservation of organic C in the soil to mitigate C-CO2 gas emission to the atmosphere), and their impact at different terrestrial scales (i.e. at a uniform soil unit into a farm, and a global or planetary scale). Moreover, we shown some soil processes related to different  soil functions, and management practices which could affect the intensity of them, in addition to characteristics or parameters of the others components of the whole system able to drive those soil processes. Finally we point out, as examples, some issues which could be study, in order to improve our knowledge of the functions of the soil, as well as the importance of integration of the different components of the system to get a sustainable agriculture.

Key words: soil, sustainability, processes, functions.
