Abstract

Introduction. Excessive accumulation of abdominal fat in childhood has become a public health problem. Waist circumference (WC) and the waist-to-height ratio (WHR) allow for the estimation of abdominal adiposity; however, derived indices such as the Body Roundness Index (BRI) and the Abdominal Body Shape Index (ABSI) have been proposed as complementary indicators. Objective. To determine the association between anthropometric indicators and the presence of abdominal obesity in schoolchildren at an elementary school in Sonora, Mexico, during the year 2025. Materials and methods. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among 143 students aged 7 to 12 years. Standardized anthropometric measurements were taken, and BRI and ABSI were calculated. Abdominal obesity was defined using BMI (≥0.5) and waist circumference (≥P90), which were used as criterion variables for ROC analysis. Normality was assessed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests; associations were evaluated using Spearman’s correlation coefficients, and discriminatory ability was assessed using the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, and a cutoff point determined by the Youden index. Results. The BRI showed a high correlation with waist circumference (ρ = 0.839) and a very high correlation with the ICT (ρ = 1.000). In the ROC analysis, the BRI had an AUC of 0.97 (95% CI 0.933–1.000) compared with the ICT and 0.98 (95% CI 0.962–0.998) compared with the CC. The ABSI showed moderate AUC values of 0.73 (95% CI 0.653–0.822) and 0.76 (95% CI 0.674–0.848), respectively. Conclusions. The BRI outperformed the ABSI in identifying abdominal obesity; it should be interpreted as a complementary indicator rather than an independent substitute.
