Abstract

ABSTRACT
An ethnobotanical study of the palms used by the Piapoco indigenous people inhabiting the northern fringe of the Amazon forest in Colombia was carried out. Through inventories, ethnobotanical walks, and workshops, 28 palm species were recorded, 23 of which were used. For these species 44 uses were recorded; the most important were thatching, wall construction, fruit consumption, beverage preparation, breeding of edible beetle larvae, and manufacture of carrying bags. The palms considered most important according to their Relative Importance Index (RI) were Attalea butyracea, A. maripa, Euterpe precatoria, Oenocarpus bacaba, O. bataua, and Socratea exorrhiza, which are under strong pressure because their harvest is mostly destructive.
