Abstract

Chikungunya fever, an acute infectious disease caused by the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), is transmitted mainly by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The epidemic spread from Africa to southern Asia and the islands of the Indian Ocean, and it is known to have been introduced to the American continent by 2013. In its epidemiological alert of February 13, 2023, the PAHO reported that in 2022, a significant increase in the number of cases and deaths from chikungunya compared to previous years were reported in the Americas.
