Objective: To design and implement teaching strategies based on gamification to demonstrate the development of Professional Competence in students of the Biochemistry course at the José María Vargas School of Medicine, UCV. Methods: A sample of 75 volunteer students from the 2019-2020 cohort participated, engaging in gamification activities throughout the academic year in the Biochemistry course. The development of professional competence, student perception towards gamification, and academic performance were evaluated. This was compared with a control group from the same cohort, which did not undergo the intervention, as well as with four cohorts of students from previous years. Results: When evaluating the development of competencies, it was observed that in terms of knowledge, the gamified group reached 100% of the participants. However, the difference in skills and attitudes before and after the educational intervention was minimal. On the other hand, 96.7% of participants in the gamified group expressed acceptance of gamification activities. Regarding academic performance, the highest number of passing students was obtained in the gamified group (66.7%), compared to the control group (49.0%), and exceeded the performance of the four previous cohorts. The number of students who withdrew or were absent in the studied cohort was lower (18.6%) than in the control group (37.0%). Conclusion: Teaching strategies based on gamification proved to be effective for knowledge development in first-year medical students, elicited a positive perception, increased motivation, and improved academic performance, as expressed in quantitative grades, in students of the Biochemistry course at the José María Vargas School of Medicine.en_US
