RESUMEN

Como entrega parcial de una investigación posdoctoral, este artículo intenta ofrecer un encuadre de libros que pueden ser considerados antecedentes de la historiografía urbana, antes de que este campo se definiera internacionalmente en los años 1960. Al comentar esos libros en los que variables urbanas fueron incorporadas, se trata de agruparlos según orientaciones teóricas e historiográficas, buscando asimismo identificar componentes disciplinarios que han sustentado la conformación de la historia urbana como campo. Se concluye que en esos antecedentes hay dos grandes momentos de ese transvase interdisciplinario: la focalización de la historia económica y social en la ciudad desde La Cité antique; la posterior incorporación de elementos espaciales y geográficos a la revisión histórica de la evolución de la forma urbana. Aunque pueda considerarse como colofón de esta última tendencia, la obra de Mumford es vista como expresión de una aproximación generalista y humanística antes del especialismo por venir.

ABSTRACT

As a partial result drawn from a postdoctoral research, this article aims at framing books that can be considered antecedents of urban history, before the international definition of this field from the 1960s. While commenting on those books in which urban variables were incorporated, the former will be gathered according to their theoretical and historiographic orientations; the disciplinary components that underpinned urban history as a field will be sought at the same time. It is concluded that there are two great moments in those antecedents: the focusing of the economic and social history’ on the city after La Cité antique; the later incorporation of spatial and geographical elements into the historical review of the urban form’s evolution. Although it might be considered as the culmination of this trend, Mumford’s work is regarded as an expression of a generalist and humanist approach, on the eve of the forthcoming specialism.
