Diversas ciudades latinoamericanas han implantadosistemas de “Bus Rapid Transit” (BRT), buscandosoluciones a los problemas de transporte. El objetivode este trabajo es examinar las experiencias de estesistema en cuatro ciudades de América Latina, conel fin de extraer las lecciones aprendidas de ellas yanalizar su aplicación para el caso de Caracas. Engeneral, los sistemas implantados han mejoradosustancialmente los problemas de transporte públicoy de congestión, especialmente aquellos enmarcadosen procesos de planificación urbana y acompañadosde medidas complementarias. En Caracasexisten condiciones favorables para su implantación.Parecería ser la hora de discutir la integración entremodos y el tema neurálgico de la autoridad únicadel transporte para Caracas. Los casos estudiadossirven para aprender qué hacer, cómo, cuándo, dóndey por qué, y también ayudan a evitar cometerequivocaciones.

ABSTRACT

Diverse Latin American cities have implanted Bus RapidTransit Systems (BRT), looking for solving its transportationproblems. The objective of this article is to examine the experiencein four cities of Latin America with BRT, with the purposeof extracting the lessons learned from them and analyzingits application for Caracas. In general, the implanted systemshave improved substantially public transport and congestionproblems, specially those framed in urban planning processesand accompanied by complementary measures. There arefavorable conditions for the implantation of BRT. It is time todiscuss the integration between modes and the need for aunique transportation authority. The studied cases serve tolearn what to do, how, when, where and why, and also helpto avoid mistakes.
