Cone beam tomography versus orthoantomography in diagnosing impacted maxillary canines: a review

Abstract

It is essential to make a good diagnosis in all those patients who require dental treatment, in those people who are over 13 years of age and the canines are not in the oral cavity, impaction of these dental organs is suspected, therefore knowing the specific location of the same is essential for good management. The objective of this review is to compare the benefits between cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and orthopantomography in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of impacted maxillary canines. Both studies are important diagnostic methods, orthopantomography is an inexpensive test that indicates the presence of a retained dental organ but not the exact position of the dental organ, CTCB offers a higher quality 3D image, of real size, in which an exhaustive study of all the components of the stomatognathic system can be carried out. The two types of imaging are very important in the diagnosis of impacted canines to have a successful treatment without any type of complication.
