A LA SOMBRA DE LOS PARÉNTESIS LOS RASGOS DEL ESCRITOR A TRAVÉS DE JULIÁN Y PASIONES DE JOSÉ GIL FORTOUL

Resumen

En este Trabajo se examina la obra narrativa de José Gil Fortoul. Célebre por haber escrito la primera historia sistemática de Venezuela, el doctor Gil fue, en rigor, un polígrafo. Su incursión en la novelística se inicia en 1888 con Julián (esbozo de un temperamento), la única de las tres composiciones que, señala la crítica, posee estructura y forma de novela. Y es que su prosa creativa no pudo eludir la pesada losa del positivismo latinoamericano del siglo XIX: el historiador y diplomático destacó como uno de los más señeros practicantes y difusores de ciertos postulados de esa Escuela filosófica. No obstante, las piezas del venezolano contienen elementos dignos de analizarse a la luz del tema del escritor incomprendido o imposibilitado de completar una obra; un tópico, curiosamente, más propio de un modernista antes que de un fervoroso novelador marcado por la filosofía positiva.

ABSTRACT
This paper examines José Fortoul’s narrative work. Fortoul became famous for having written the first systematic history of Venezuela. Doctor Gil was, honestly, a polygraph. His incursion in the novel begins in 1888 with his work Julián (outline of a temperament). According to criticism, this novel is the one of three compositions which has the form and the structure of a novel. In the XIX century, his creative prose could not avoid the heavy flagstone of Latino American positivisms. This historian and diplomatic stood out because he was one of the most unique practicing and diffuser of some postulates of that philosophical school. Nevertheless, the pieces of this Venezuelan author contain some elements worth of being analyzed in the light of this subject: a misunderstood writer or a writer unable to finish a piece. Strangely, this topic would be more typical of a modernist rather than a fervent author of novels marked by positive philosophy.
