Abstract

Anti-reflux surgery has precise indications and well established by experts. The objective was to characterize the experience in Nissen-type anti-reflux surgery in an advanced laparoscopic surgery unit in Maracaibo. One hundred and three patients who underwent laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication in the surgery unit of the Clínica Paraíso Teaching Medical Center, Maracaibo - Venezuela, were prospectively evaluated for a 5-year follow-up period. All patients underwent special procedures: esophagram, gastroscopy, 24-hour phmetry, and esophageal manometry prior to surgery. Also, complications and variables were recorded to measure symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux. The results obtained were presented in absolute figures and the X2 test was used to establish significant differences. Nissen-type anti-reflux laparoscopic surgery achieved 91% control of postoperative gastroesophageal reflux symptoms with a low percentage of complications.
