Evaluation of patients with celiac disease in the gastroenterological consultation

Abstract

Objective: Evaluate patients with symptoms suggestive of Celiac Disease (CD), time between the appearance of symptoms and diagnosis, most frequent alterations, clinical, biochemistry and endoscopy. Materials and Methods: Epidemiological study, cross-sectional, descriptive, clinical history, laboratory and endoscopy were performed. Results: We evaluated 258 patients, 111 met the criteria (59 men and 52 women). Average age 35 ± 17 years (95% CI from 32 to 39 years). The duration to make the diagnosis up to more than 10 years. 39.6% had a family history of CD. Gastrointestinal symptoms: Abdominal pain (75.7%), Abdominal Distension (70%), chronic diarrhea (55.9%), Arthralgias 51.4%. 55% food allergy and lactose intolerance. 73.8% presented anemia; 43.2% microcytosis. Folic acid deficiency in 31.5%, Vitamin B12 deficiency in 25.2%, hypoproteinemia in 74%, hypoalbuminemia in 73%. 30.6% Giardiasis. 19.8% elevated TSH, 24% vitamin D deficiency. 23.4% and 28.8% elevated ALT and AST values ​​respectively. Endoscopy 30% Marsh 2. p <0.05. Conclusion: in the face of biochemical, clinical and endoscopic alterations, in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, rule out CD.
