Abstract

Background: Between 10-20% of the esophageal foreign body (FB) requires endoscopic resolution, and 1% surgical extraction. Objective: to report the experience in therapeutic endoscopy for the extraction of esophageal foreign body according to its characteristics. Patients and Method: retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study, January 2018-July 2022. Variables: age, sex, type of CE, symptoms, videoendoscopy (emergency, urgency and non-urgency), sedation/general anesthesia, removal (first endoscopy, second, surgical), accessories/ technique. Results: 105 children, age 3.77±2.31 (range: 10 months-11 years), 72.50% preschoolers and 67.50% males, 16,19% asymptomatic. The coin at 82.86%. Emergency endoscopy 3/105(2.85%), urgent 89/105(84.76%) and non-urgent 13/105(12.38%). Deep sedation 95.24%. Successful endoscopic removal 103/105 (98,09%) and failed in 2/105 (1,90%) resolved surgically; 31/105(29.52%) required a second procedure. There was no relationship between performing the first or second endoscopy and time spent by the EC, p = 0.5368, nor with the location in the esophagus, p = 0.9733 Extraction of 64 coins, 3 tendrils and 3 button batteries with mouse or alligator forceps, in combination with polypectomy snare/sleep basket 22 coins and one tendril. meters were extracted with a polypectomy basket/snare Tripod organic FB and polypectomy snare Hydrostatic balloon and push as an aid in the removal of a seed, coin and a button battery In the latter, retrograde approach through gastrostomy due to unrecoverable FB; 2 batteries surgically extracted. Polypectomy snare and push technique was used with a roller bearing and a tendril. Conclusion: the success extraction of an EC depends on the location, characteristics of the object, elapsed time and the expertise of the endoscopist.
