Abstract

The panorama of malnutrition in the world is unfortunate, currently affecting one in three people, which reveals the magnitude of this syndemic that has been generating great imbalances and is increasing despite the efforts dedicated to its care. It is not just about food for everyone, but multiple and complex factors come together in not very friendly environments. Malnutrition takes different forms: low birth weight; malnutrition (underweight, stunting and wasting), micronutrient deficiencies; and overweight and obesity. Growth retardation in children under five years of age summarizes the magnitude of failure to thrive in the first 1,000 days and the impact of child malnutrition on vulnerable physical, economic, sociocultural, and political environments. The consequences of malnutrition during the first 1000 days of life demarcate the epidemiological map in terms of risks and increase morbidity and mortality, but also leave an indelible mark on human development, since it limits the physical and mental growth of children. children at levels well below their full genetic potential, with significant consequences throughout their lives. Although these forms of malnutrition affect all countries, developing countries bear the greatest cost and can coexist in the family, community and individuals.
