RESUMEN

El cocotero (Cocos nucifera) es una especie monoica cuyo fruto uniseminado de grantamaño es comercializado en toda la región tropical. Se realizó el estudio anatómico de lasflores estaminadas y pistiladas con el fin de aportar información para el conocimiento de labiología floral de esta especie. El material vegetal fue fijado y deshidratado aplicándose técnicasanatómicas convencionales para su estudio. Las estructuras florales se caracterizanpor presentar abundante tejido esclerenquimático, idioblastos con rafidios, cuerpos de sílicey otras sustancias; androceo con exotecio y endotecio uniestratificados; gineceo con nectariosseptales intercarpelares y tres óvulos bitegumentados. Las flores de esta palma presentanun conjunto de rasgos anatómicos que favorecen su protección contra el consumo porparte de insectos u otros animales.

ABSTRACT

Coconut (Cocos nucifera) is a monoic species with a large one-seeded fruit that is commercializedin all tropical regions. A study of the anatomic structure of staminate and pistillateflowers was carried out in order to complement the knowledge on the reproductive biologyof this species. The plant material was fixed, dehydrated, and conventional anatomical techniqueswere applied. Floral structure is characterized by abundant schlerenchymatous tissueand idioblasts with raphides, silica bodies and other substances; androecium with exotheciumand endothecium composed by a single layer of cells; gynoecium with intercarpellaryseptal nectaries and three bitegumented ovules. The flowers of this palm present a group ofanatomic traits that address its protection against insects or other animal feedings.
