RESUMEN
Para el último tercio del siglo XIX, Maracaibo experimenta cambios en su estructura urbana y en la arquitectura de sus edificios, que simbolizan el paso de la condición de colonia a la de república. La ciudad presenta un bienestar económico que deriva de la floreciente actividad del circuito agroexportador, desarrollada por la élite comercial, con el apoyo de grupos políticos e intelectuales, quienes operaron como promotores del proyecto de modernización de la urbe.
El presente artículo constituye un intento de aproximación a la ciudad de Maracaibo para finales del siglo XIX e inicios del siglo XX; surge a partir de la investigación "La ciudad a través del tiempo". Se trabaja sobre la revisión de fuentes escritas por autores de la época e imágenes fotográficas, muchas de ellas inéditas, encontradas en archivos locales, que muestran una visión idealizada de la realidad urbana de Maracaibo del novecientos, una ciudad moderna y cómoda, organizada para satisfacer las necesidades de vida de sus moradores, especialmente de los grupos dominantes.
ABSTRACT
During the last three decades of the nineteenth century, Maracaibo experiments a series of changes in its urban structure and architecture, which symbolize the path from a colony to a republic. The city achieves an economic wellbeing which derives from the flourishing activity of an agricultural exporting circuit, developed by the commercial elite wich he help of political groups and intellectuals, which act as the promoters of the modernization project of the city.
This papar is an approximation of the city of Maracaibo as it was in late nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century; and is the product of the research project "La Ciudad a través del Tiempo". Material is obtained from writers uf the period and photographic images, many of them never published before, which were found in local archives and portray an idealized vision of nineteenth century Maracaibo, a city which was modern and confortable, organized to satisfy the necessities of its dwellers, especially those of the dominant groups.
