ABSTRACT In this work the values of Vp, Vs and thickness of the soil were estimated applying seismic refraction methods and correlation with existing geological and geotechnical data in the area. For the geophysical evaluation a total of 30 seismic refraction profiles were taken. Thickness of the sediments in the zone range from 0 m to the North, where Las Mercedes Formation outcrops, up to 65 m sedimentary thickness to the South. The Vp values for the area of study range from 400 m/s to 1500 m/s, showing a high lithological variability; while values of Vs are in the range of 220 m/s to 720 m/s, indicating that the area has a high average cutting speed. In general, it can be interpreted that for both P and S waves the distribution of higher speed values occur in the areas where fewer sedimentary thickness are present, allowing to divide the campus of the Universidad Central de Venezuela in 2 zones: the West zone that can be classified as dense soil or soft rock and the East zone that can be classified as soft ground.
