El cáncer gástrico sigue constituyendo un importante problema de salud mundial, especialmente en países de Asia oriental. Se considera el quinto cáncer diagnosticado con más frecuencia y la tercera causa principal de muertes relacionadas con el cáncer en el mundo. El cribado radiológico y endoscópico en zonas de alta prevalencia es eficaz en la disminución de la tasa de mortalidad del cáncer gástrico (temprano y avanzado). El tamizaje permite realizar el diagnóstico y el tratamiento endoscópico o quirúrgico del cáncer gástrico precoz, garantizando muy buen pronóstico.
