TEODOLITOS ENTRE MONTONERAS:LA INGENIERÍA VENEZOLANA EN TIEMPOS PRE-PETROLEROS / THEODOLITES AMONG «MONTONERAS»: VENEZUELAN ENGINEERING IN PRE-PETROLEUM TIMES

Resumen

Para contribuir a una valoración sistemática de la historia de la ingeniería nacional, prosiguiendo la senda de investigación cuyo producto previo fue Méndez (1997), presentamos aquí una detallada compilación en secuencia temporal de hechos,personajes y circunstancias relacionados con la evolución de nuestra ingeniería desde la época colonial hasta el comienzode la tercera década del Siglo XX, momento en que la irrupción de la explotación petrolera en gran escala generatransformaciones modernizadoras y decisivas en Venezuela, y obviamente en la actividad ingenieril. A tal efecto, se harealizado el arqueo cuidadoso de un amplio acervo de referencias sobre el tema, para seleccionar de dichas fuentes losdatos pertinentes al objetivo de este trabajo. Esto lo hemos entendido como un inventario obligatorio para construir unavisión de conjunto de las raíces sembradas en los tres siglos iniciales de actuación de ingenieros y afines en el país,precedente de necesaria consideración para comprender lo que hoy es y lo que en el futuro será este espacio de acción ycreación profesional, por lo cual estimamos que nuestro aporte de investigación podría ser de valor para comprender supresencia socio-histórica, pues hemos constatado que no se ha hecho hasta ahora un trabajo de compilación parecido, yaque los esfuerzos análogos han tendido a concentrarse en áreas especificas (militar, construcción civil, hidráulica, formacióneducativa, etc.), por lo que han dado menos énfasis a la presentación de una visión integral del proceso evolutivo de laingeniería venezolana.

ABSTRACT

As part of an attempt to systematically evaluate the history of engineering in Venezuela, a line of research whose previouscontribution was Méndez 1997, we present a detailed chronological compilation of facts, protagonists and events relatedto the evolution of engineering in our country from colonial times up to the third decade of the twentieth century, themoment when the emergence of petroleum exploitation on a large scale marked the beginning of decisive changes leadingto the modernization of Venezuela and, as a matter of course, to changes in the way engineering was practiced in thecountry. To this end, we have carried out a thorough review of all bibliographical and referential material on the subject soas to select the data considered most pertinent to the aims of this study. This has been understood as an absolutely vitalstep towards creating a vision of the seeds sown in the first three centuries of engineering and similar activities in thecountry, so that we may be able to understand what the current state of engineering is and what the future may hold for theprofession. As such, we consider that this contribution might be of some value if we are to begin to comprehend the sociohistoricalrole of engineering in Venezuela, since, as far as we know, no other similar study has been attempted, althoughthere are publications that concentrate on specific areas (military, civil construction, hydraulics, education and training,etc.), though these have placed less emphasis on presenting a general, integrated view of the evolution of Venezuelanengineering.
