ABSTRACT

This paper propose a model of didactical counseling, in order to improve the basic mathematical knowledge of thestudents entering the Engineering School of the UCV, because the failures in the use of such basic knowledge is, in theopinion of many professors of Calculus I, one of the main causes of the high repetition and dropout rates in that matter. The proposal was founded on experiences reported by several researchers regarding the positive impact of remedialcourses in mathematics, the new theories psycho-pedagogical that promote learning environments focused on studentwork and the incorporation of informatics media as support tools. In order to measure the effect of the proposed model inthe students performance in Calculus I, it was designed an experience with one experimental group and one control group, where the only difference between them was the participation in the proposed program. The results of statistical analysisperformed with respect to the academic achievement of both groups indicate that the proposed model had positive effectsin the performance in Calculus I of the students who participated in the experience. Keywords: Mathematics Education, Teaching Mathematics in Engineering, Academic performance in Calculus I,Mathematics Learning, leveling of knowledge in mathematics
