HITOS DEL PROCESO HISTÓRICO-SOCIAL DE LA INGENIERÍA VENEZOLANA DE 1958 A 1998 / Milestones in the Socio-historical Process of Venezuelan Engineering 1958-1998

Resumen

Se presenta un detallado registro en secuencia temporal de eventos, circunstancias y personajes relacionados con la evolución de la ingeniería venezolana en la parte final del siglo XX, desde 1958 hasta 1998. El punto de inicio se determinó en vistas a que, con el final de la dictadura militar, ese año marca la transición entre fases distintas en lo económico-social y lo político-institucional en nuestra historia contemporánea, hecho que ha sido ampliamente aceptado y reconocido así por la investigación sobre el tema. La fecha final también parece señalar un momento de cambio semejante, pese a que es aspecto aún en debate debido a la proximidad temporal. Se trata de un inventario obligado para construir una visión e interpretación holística sobre un tiempo fundamental en el proceso histórico de la ingeniería nacional, antecedente de necesaria consideración para comprender lo que es hoy y lo que será en el futuro. El valor de la presente indagación está en emprender un trabajo de compilación que no se había hecho hasta ahora, tanto por lo relativamente próximo al presente del lapso en estudio, como porque esfuerzos análogos tienden a concentrarse en áreas especializadas, con menos énfasis en presentar una visión de conjunto sobre el desenvolvimiento de la ingeniería venezolana.

ABSTRACT
We present a detailed register of events, circumstances and protagonists involved in the evolution of engineering in Venezuela in the latter part of the twentieth century from 1958 to 1998. The first date was chosen as, with the end of the military dictatorship, it marked a transition between quite distinct socio-economic and politico-institutional phases in our contemporary history, a fact that has been widely accepted and recognized as such in research on the subject. The closing date also appears to signal a moment of change, even though this is still under debate mainly due to it being so recent. Our inventory of events is a necessary step towards building a holistic vision and interpretation of a fundamental period in the history of engineering in the country which, in turn, helps us to understand engineering today and what it may become in the future. The value of this study is that it provides a compilation that has not been previously presented in this way, both for the relative proximity to the present of the period covered and because other efforts have tended to concentrate on specialized areas rather than give a broad view of the development of Venezuelan engineering.
