Resumen
The genus Philoscaptus Brèthes, 1919 is revised. It now includes only P. bonariensis (Burmeister), a species found mainly in open areas along the Paraná River basin. The other species, P. laminifer Dechambre, is transferred to Saccharoscaptus, new genus described here, that has many distinctive characters. Comments about the status of both genera are made and an updated key for males of neotropical Pentodontini genera is given. Also, the current status of Ligyrus Burmeister and Tomarus Erichson isdiscussed and an updated checklist with the known species included in each genus is also provided.
