Abstract

The finality of the ciceronian rhetoric is politics, for this reason the one who intends to lead other men, not only should know how to persuade them but how to guide them to good. In this precisely consists the old wisdom. Through this short story Cicero shows us how this practical knowledge is distorted in two conflicting positions: the one which suposes that in order to reach the good is needed the science and, for that reason, opinion and also public debate, should be discarded, and the one that purports to reduce all human conduction act to yield wills. In other words, it is the fighting between those in favor of the «res»and those supporting the «verbum», between the ones in favor of the content and those supporting the form. The first ones shall be called philosophers and the others rhetoricians. Facing this useless division, which leaves orphan of one of the two, to the men of that period (and perhaps also to the men of today), this brings up as a consequence wise people who do not know how to govern and governments devoid of wisdom. Cicero endeavors to recover that old unity.
