LA FLORA DEDICADA A CARACAS: UN HOMENAJE DE LOS BOTÁNICOS A LA CAPITAL DE VENEZUELA

Resumen

Se revela la magnitud del homenaje que numerosos botánicos han querido rendir a la ciudad de Caracas, dedicándole especies consideradas por ellos como nuevas para la ciencia.Para tal fin, se elaboró una lista de las especies botánicas que tienen en su nombre científicoel epíteto “caracasana” o alguna de sus desinencias. Se consultó material escrito, bases de datos virtuales, especialistas en taxonomía y se realizó una intensiva revisión de muestras de herbario. Por lo menos 229 nombres científicos de taxones representativos de 69 familias han sido dedicados a Caracas. De éstos, 15,73% se refiere a nombres correctos (aceptados) y 84,27% califica como sinónimos. Se encontró que el tipo de la mayoría de las especies enlistadas proviene de Caracas.

The flora dedicated to Caracas: a botanical tribute to the capital of Venezuela

The magnitude of the number of tributes that numerous botanists have paid to the cityof Caracas dedicating species that they have considered as new is revealed. To do this, a list of botanical species that have in their scientific name the epithet “caracasana” or any of its endings was done. Written material, virtual databases and taxonomy specialists were consulted, plus the intensive revision of herbarium specimens. At least 229 scientific names of taxa representative of 69 families dedicated to Caracas were found. Of these, 15.73% are accepted names and 84.27% are synonyms. The type specimens of the majority of these speciescome from Caracas.
