CARACTERIZACIÓN DE LOS PACIENTES CON DIABETES MELLITUS DEL SERVICIO DE ENDOCRINOLOGÍA DEL HOSPITAL MILITAR UNIVERSITARIO DR. CARLOS ARVELO QUE ACUDIERON A CONSULTA EN EL PERIODO DE ENERO DE 2018 A MARZO DE 2023

Resumen

Introducción: La Diabetes Mellitus es una enfermedad altamente prevalente a nivel mundial, estimándose hacia el año 2045 un aumento de su incidencia y prevalencia. Aproximadamente 50% de las personas con diabetes no están diagnosticadas, siendo en Venezuela aproximadamente 34% los pacientes que aún no han sido diagnosticados. Objetivo: Evaluar las características de la población de pacientes con Diabetes Mellitus que asisten a la consulta de endocrinología del Hospital Militar Universitario Dr. Carlos Arvelo. Materiales y métodos: Estudio de tipo retrospectivo, de carácter descriptivo, cuya muestra fue de 7688 pacientes que acudieron a la consulta de endocrinología del Hospital Militar Universitario Dr. Carlos Arvelo en el período de enero de 2018 hasta marzo de 2023. Resultados: El 85% de la población de estudio padecía diabetes mellitus tipo 2 y 15% diabetes mellitus tipo 1. Dentro de las enfermedades asociadas se encuentran la hipertensión arterial y la dislipidemia. Entre las complicaciones crónicas encontradas están la enfermedad arterial periférica y enfermedades cardiovasculares; además enfermedad renal diabética, neuropatía diabética, retinopatía diabética y podopatía diabética. Un importante porcentaje de la población de estudio presentaba grados variables de sobrepeso y obesidad. Aproximadamente un 12% de la población con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 estaba manejada con antidiabéticos orales y el restante se encontraba en terapia con insulinas. Conclusiones: Dado el aumento permanente en la incidencia y prevalencia de diabetes y sus complicaciones asociadas, los costos para tratar la enfermedad y sus complicaciones van en aumento. Por ello es indispensable conocer los datos estadísticos y epidemiológicos de nuestro entorno, para desarrollar planes de salud con el objetivo de reducir, identificar y tratar estas complicaciones haciendo intervenciones oportunas. Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus is a highly prevalent disease worldwide, with an increase in its incidence and prevalence estimated by 2045. Approximately 50% of people with diabetes are undiagnosed, with approximately 34% of patients in Venezuela still undiagnosed. Objective: To evaluate the characteristics of the population of patients with Diabetes Mellitus who attend the endocrinology consultation at the Dr. Carlos Arvelo Military University Hospital. Materials and Methods: Retrospective study, of a descriptive nature, whose sample was 7,688 patients who attended the endocrinology consultation of the Dr. Carlos Arvelo Military University Hospital in the period from January 2018 to March 2023. Results: 85 % of the study population suffered from type 2 diabetes mellitus and 15% from type 1 diabetes mellitus. Among the associated diseases are high blood pressure and dyslipidemia. Among the chronic complications found are peripheral arterial disease and cardiovascular diseases; also diabetic kidney disease, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic retinopathy and diabetic podopathy. A significant percentage of the study population had varying degrees of overweight and obesity. Approximately 12% of the population with type 2 diabetes mellitus was managed with oral antidiabetics and the remainder was on insulin therapy. Conclusions: Given the permanent increase in the incidence and prevalence of diabetes and its associated complications, the costs to treat the disease and its complications are increasing. Therefore, it is essential to know the statistical and epidemiological data of our environment, to develop health plans with the aim of reducing, identifying and treating these complications by making timely interventions.
